About Wildside UK Photography

A little background

From a very early age I became intrigued by the wonders of our stunning UK wildlife and its natural beauty. Being brought up in the country, I was steeped in all manner of fascinating creatures - birds, animals, amphibians and insects. I was soon inspired to save for and purchase my first camera, a Brownie Box Camera at the age of 8 and have since been fascinated by all aspects of wildlife photography throughout my life's journey.

A particular passion is to witness and hopefully photograph the mannerisms and behavior of our sadly, very vulnerable and dwindling UK wildlife. Although wildlife photography has always been a major focus, I have come to appreciate the significant value of expanding my photographic journey into other genres, thus helping to find ideas and experiences which feed back into my wildlife work and images – in particular from landscape, street, portrait, and sporting experiences.

Capturing single shot images is an enjoyable experience but in recent years the tendency has been to move away from single shot into Projects, Series, Collections and Stories , the intention being to create a more holistic, expansive, creative approach to recording the mannerisms, behavior and life cycle of various species.

This approach led me, in April 2019 to achieving a distinction from the Royal Photographic Society, for my work depicting the breeding lifecycle of the Great Crested Grebe, (see some of these images below), and was awarded an Associate membership - ARPS. In 2019 I became a Surrey Photographic Association judge and in 2021 a Southern Counties Photographic Federation judge.

Photography takes me to many varied nature conservation locations in the UK and I am particularly interested in rewilding locations and organisations. I hope through my work that I can inspire others, particularly the young to enjoy and participate in nurturing our vulnerable UK wildlife and it's vitally important and ever shrinking habitat.
